Fender and Gibson

Among the music industry, electric guitars stand out among other instruments due to their versatility, diversity, and overall aesthetic. With the various guitar build styles and amplifier effects, guitarists have the ability to produce sounds that are completely different and unique. It is because of these traits that electric guitars are some of the most popular gateway instruments for young players, while still remaining highly regarded among the music industry. Electric guitar and amplifier producers such as Fender and Gibson have become driving forces among the industry because of their consistent high quality products and marketing tactics.

Fender

Fender was founded in California in 1946 and has since developed into one of the most popular electric guitar brands across the world. The brand offers consumers a large variety of electric guitars, bass guitars, amplifiers, and other gear. The Telecaster is Fender's most iconic guitar, and was the first guitar style produced starting around the time that the brand was founded.

Other popular guitar styles produced by Fender include the Jazzmaster, Jaguar, and Stratocaster. Stratocasters have become synonymous with rock music since many popular musicians were known for using that style of guitar. Jimi Hendrix, one of the most highly-regarded guitar players of all time, used a Stratocaster for many of his performances.

Although many of Fender's guitar designs are geared toward the modern audience, 2026 has brought the introduction of the Vintera III series, a line of guitars that have taken a step back to the vintage style of the 1960s and 70s Fender designs. With specific details surrounding the pickups, hardware, and coloring, these guitars truly match Fender's slogan for the series: "A Vintage Sound for the Modern Era."

Fender's marketing style has truly shined throughout the promotional process for this series. The brand typically focuses on highlighting the capabilities of its products through online writing and videos. For the Vintera III line, Fender has incorporated these established methods while emphasizing the vintage aesthetic that is included in the construction of each guitar. Many different guitarists have been chosen to discuss their favorite aspects of a guitar from the Vintera III line, playing in different styles and discussing the connections to other great guitarists.

Using player testimonials as a form of marketing is nothing new to Fender. With the rise of social media marketing, Fender has utilized brand partnerships and PR packages as a way to reach a wider audience. One guitarist on Instagram has used her platform to inspire young women to pick up playing the guitar, to which Fender responded by sending her a Fender Telecaster, allowing both parties to benefit from the publicity.

Gibson

Founded in Nashville, Tennessee in 1902, Gibson is one of the world's leading guitar manufacturers. Gibson produces a different guitar style than Fender, focusing on the vintage style that separates its from the sportier style that defines Fender. Some of the electric guitar designs from Gibson have similar elements to acoustic guitars due to the more symmetrical designs that Gibson often includes.

The most iconic electric guitar style produced by Gibson is the Les Paul. Film lovers and guitarists alike will most likely remember this guitar's appearance in School of Rock, as Jack Black's character frequently plays a Les Paul throughout the film.

@everysingleguitars This is why nobody can replace Jack Black 🐐🎤 *** School of Rock is a 2003 comedy about Dewey Finn — a washed-up, broke rock guitarist who gets kicked out of his band and accidentally lands a job posing as a substitute teacher at a strict prep school. At first, he’s completely unqualified and just trying to make rent, but when he discovers his students can actually play instruments, he hatches a plan to turn the class into a secret rock band and enter a local Battle of the Bands competition. What starts as a selfish scheme turns into something much deeper — Dewey teaches the kids about confidence, creativity, rebellion, and the soul of rock ‘n’ roll, while they help him rediscover his own purpose. Beneath all the comedy and chaos, it’s a story about believing in yourself, breaking the rules for the right reasons, and finding meaning through music. It’s funny, loud, and full of heart — a perfect mix of passion and pure rock energy. *** 💎🪙 BUY/SELL/TRADE @ EverySingleGuitars.com #schoolofrock #rock #movie #comedy #rockandroll ♬ original sound - every single guitars.

Gibson's marketing is similar to Fender, with brand quality, prestige, and versatility being a strong component in why the brand has made such an impact in the industry. A large amount of Gibson's publicity occurs when long-time fans of Gibson record themselves playing different tunes. While Fender is well-known for rock songs, Gibson has had its own hand in the history of rock and blues.

Since Gibson is such a long-lasting brand, a lot of its marketing happens in Tennessee itself. The Gibson Garage is Gibson's main store and houses a stage for performances, a custom modification shop, and lots of apparel merchandise. For Gibson lovers living near or visiting one of the most famous musical cities, visiting the Gibson Garage is the perfect place to try out different guitar styles or see musical performances.

Where to Improve

Fender and Gibson both do an excellent job marketing their unique guitar styles to established players. The issue arrives with marketing to younger individuals who are curious about diving into the world of guitars. Because of the abundance of different styles of guitar, even among just one brand, beginner players often feel overwhelmed by the overabundance of decisions that need to be made regarding guitar body build, pickup style, and gear that matches the guitar style. Considering the fact that many high-quality electric guitars can cost over $1,000, beginners need straightforward information that can convince them to spend that much money on an instrument.

As a guitarist who just began my journey of learning how to play, being able to watch short-form content about Fender guitars has been extremely helpful. Fender's website includes a page called Find My Fender, which helps promote the different types of guitars. Although I did not use this function, it could be helpful for other beginners. Since brands like Fender already partner with independent guitarists to promote their guitars to beginners, translating that effort into providing guidance for how to find learning resources and gear, such as amps, that are essential for the iconic electric guitar sound would make the large guitar purchase seem more feasible. Since testimonials and short-form content are both so popular on social media, they would be the perfect methods for conveying information to possible consumers.
