A24's Genius Marketing Take for The Drama
Theatrical releases for films are some of the most widely advertised forms
of media. Many people online get excited when seeing the actors at premiere
events, in behind-the-scenes interviews, and professional photoshoots.
Although many movies marketed as romantic comedies and dramas rely on this
approach, the film studio
A24
has taken a new approach with its upcoming film.
The Drama, starring Zendaya and Robert Pattison, is set to release on April 3, 2026.
Instead of utilizing mainly traditional methods of advertising, the film
studio has taken the fictional characters and brought them to life. This
genius approach to promoting the movie has allowed it to both gain
popularity for its exciting plot, but for the marketing itself.
Fake Newspaper Engagement Ad
One of the first nontraditional methods that A24 used to market
The Drama was bringing the characters' engagement to life in an
engagement advertisement in a real newspaper. Instead of simply doing an
engagment themed photoshoot, a full ad was placed in the
Boston Globe in December 9, 2025. The paper immediately drew
attention from the public due to the high-profile actors within the image as
well as Zendaya's actual engagement to British actor Tom Holland. According
to
ABC News, the caption under the image stated
"Emma Harwood will become the bride of Charlie Thompson on April 3 in
Boston, MA" in reference to the main characters of the
film.
A24 also posted the engagement announcement on its official social
media pages as well, brining in even more attention to the marketing
technique.
Norman and Blake
Following the fake engagement announcement in the Boston Globe, A24
promoted the film through a professional photoshoot with
Norman and Blake. The pair of photographers are most well-known for their work with
Vogue,
Harper's Bazaar, Brides. Several high-profile celebrities, such as
Charlie Puth, have had pictures taken by Norman and Blake as well. Zendaya and Robert
Pattison were posed in a candid setting, similar to pictures that are found
in family photo albums.
The images from the Norman and Blake photoshoot and the engagement
announcement both directly reflect imagse seen in the film's trailer. The
inclusion of film pictures in other PR content has helped The Drama's
upcoming release a much anticipated event.
Valentine's Day Announcement
Following the theme of a fake engagement, A24 created an
RSVP website with details about the characters' wedding. The website doesn't
just include the date of the "wedding"/movie premiere, it includes
information about places to do in Boston as well as information about the
actual wedding venue. The content in the "Our Story" is exceptionally
well-written, stating:
Charlie first spotted Emma at a coffee shop one fall afternoon and
somehow worked up the nerve to say hello. What started out as a bit of a
trainwreck ended with them exchanging numbers—which soon led to three
hour phone calls about everything and nothing, lazy Sundays camped out
in parks and bookstores, and late-night diner runs where Emma ordered
burgers so rare they were practically mooing. Two years of laughing
until their ribs hurt later, and they're ready to make it official. Come
celebrate their next chapter.
With a cream and red theme sprinkled with pictures pulled from other online
posts about The Drama, the RSVP website matches the romantic theme of the
film perfectly.
Dropping Hints
Part of The Drama's intrigue is its unclear tone, as the trailer has hinted
at romantic elements, dramatic tension, and uncomfortable dialogue all
wrapped up into one film. Many people are speculating what exactly drives
the drama of the film's plot line. This has absolutely been taken account by
the team promoting the film as they drop hints through photoshoot releases.
One of Zendaya's posts on her Instagram features tense pictures of her
character Emma and Robert Pattison's character Charlie in a fierce showdown.
Fans can only guess what the issue is.
Interview Magazine
Zendaya and Robert Pattison are no strangers to unique interviews, and
their inclusion in Interview Magazine is no exception. The pair were able to
discuss their upcoming roles in The Drama as well as their other two
co-starring films:
The Odyssey
and
Dune 3. The interview featured a natural, fun conversation between the two,
ranging from their thoughts about red flags in relationships to their
favorite romantic films. In addition to their conversation, Zendaya and
Patterson were featured in funky, unique photos that completely stood out
against common interview photoshoots.
The Drama Wedding Chapel
Perhaps one of the most unique publicity stunts that A24 has done for The
Drama is the
Drama Wedding Chapel. Couples were able to submit an application to get married in a special
Las Vegas venue on March 14th from 10 am to 12 am, complete with witnesses,
photographers, and even a few hinted surprises.
One of the surprises, it turns out, was Zendaya herself stepping in as an
official wedding guest. Videos of her at the wedding venue quickly went viral throughout the
day.
Given The Drama's heavy focus on the main characters' wedding, this was the perfect move for getting fans invested in the actors while also helping people celebrate their special day.
The Strategy's Lasting Impact
Due to the ever-increasing impact of A24's unique promotional strategy for
The Drama, the film is projected to earn anywhere from $15 million to
$25 million during its opening weekend. Considering the film's $30 million
budget, its premiere weekend will be more than sufficient to place the movie
in good standing in theaters.
Online conversations about The Drama are doing more than just
discussing the hinted conflict of the film. Everyone is talking about the
unique photoshoots, interviews, and in-universe information about the
fictional wedding. The marketing for the movie has done more that push it
into the public's eye, it has set a new standard for how immersive media
marketing can be.
